Having been automatically left behind at the age of 10 in the 4th grade due to language essentially robbed Manny of his initial opportunity for industry and could have been internalized in a way that lead to another incident of him being left behind in 7th grade. It is possible that because of this setback, Manny overcompensated for his perceived lack of ability by developing an arrogant nature and augmented sense of power that he may have felt robbed of through events in school. School, taking its place in Manny’s exosystem, is also an institutional context where cultures†¦show more content†¦According to Erikson, Manny’s psychosocial crisis at 16 (adolescence) would be ego identity versus role confusion. During this time Manny would be determining who he is and where he is going. This point of transition in his life may help explain the development of an arrogant attitude. Perhaps he framed his choice to leave school not as one that indicated is inability but one that he chose out of the pseudo sense of power he had given himself through his arrogance. Based on his life structure at the time, Manny had an augmented role in his family that helped to shape this identity as well. For Manny, he was tasked with contributing to the financial security and stability of his family without much regard for his interests, skill or ability all while bearing witness and being subject to the physical and emotional abuse by his alcoholic father. These additional risk factors likely prompted him to employ the same negative coping mechanisms as his father (escapism) though his may not have been through substance abuse; he lived an entirely secret life working as a dealer of illicit goods in order to s upport himself and his family. To this end, it is also quiet possible that he was enabled in his double life by his family’s willful ignorance as he may have been providing adequate
